Proper surface preparation is critical in order to obtain a lasting
finish. Take your time! Here are a few additional hints:
Always read and follow the manufacturer's instructions and safety
precautions before starting. Spread plastic on the ground to collect
and dispose of paint chips, sanding dust, and drips. Many marinas
have strict guidelines concerning environmental contamination, and fines can
result from allowing waste to fall to the ground. Never leave bare
wood exposed for too long - it can absorb moisture which will affect your final
finish. Remove sanding dust with a cloth moistened with an
appropriate thinner. Optimal painting conditions are when the
temperature is 50-80°F and relative humidity is below 65%. Never
apply varnish or paint in direct sunlight on a hot day. Stir enamels
and varnishes gently - shaking may cause air bubbles. Several thin
coats are better than one thick coat Many paints, especially
antifouling bottom paints, contain substances that can pose a serious threat to
your health and the environment if proper precautions are not taken.
Put on protective clothing, especially eye and hand protection,
because you'll be subjected to toxins and strong chemicals. Be sure to wash off
sanding residue or solvents immediately after the job is completed.
Make sure you have goggles, respirators, gloves, and coveralls for everyone.
